Nintendo Direct: Zelda titles to get Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrades

By Jack Taylor – 2 April 2025

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will both receive launch-day upgrades on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games were announced during the Switch 2's Nintendo Direct presentation, and allow compatible Nintendo Switch games to be upgraded for the new system with new content, enhanced visuals, and more besides.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom will both receive Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs, which will be available on 5 June, the same day Nintendo Switch 2 launches worldwide. Both games will benefit from enhanced resolution and frame rate with the packs, as well as HDR support and faster load times.

Players who have played either game on Nintendo Switch will also be able to transfer their save data to the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions, which will also include a second manual save slot for each game, allowing for a second save to be started without losing an existing one.

Additionally, both games will be able to utilise Zelda Notes, a new feature of the Nintendo Switch Online app (which will be renamed to the Nintendo Switch app in late May). Zelda Notes allows players to find hard-to-find Korok seeds using a voiced navigation tool, view completion rates for locations and landmarks, and listen to Voice Memories, stories from characters such as Princess Zelda.

Zelda Notes will also allow for creations in Tears of the Kingdom to be shared via QR codes, allowing other players to autobuild the same schematics. Items can also be shared with another player via QR codes. A new Photo Studio mode will also allow photos taken in-game to be edited and shared.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will launch on 5 June, alongside Nintendo Switch 2. For each title, players can either pick up a physical copy with the Nintendo Switch game card and the upgrade pack included, or purchase and download the upgrade pack separately via Nintendo eShop or a code card. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack owners will be able to download both upgrade packs at no additional cost.
