Nintendo Switch 2 announced with 2025 launch date

By Jack Taylor – 16 January 2025

Nintendo Switch 2 has been revealed, with a 2025 launch window confirmed and a Nintendo Direct to follow.

After months of waiting, rumours, and the more-than-occasional leak, Nintendo Switch 2 has finally been officially revealed in a new teaser video from Nintendo.

Looking sleek in all-black with a new dock, as well as colour accents beneat the two Joy-Con control sticks, the video offers a firm look at the new system. While similar to the original Switch at first glance, the successor is implied to be larger, and is confirmed to have a second USB-C slot on the top of the system. It also has a new U-shaped stand on the back.

While not confirmed, the teaser seems to indicate that, as suggested by several rumours, the Joy-Con controllers now attach to the system magnetically, rather than via a rail. Some rumours have also suggested that the Joy-Con could be usable as a mouse-like input device, which may have been hinted at during the trailer just over a minute in, as the two Joy-Cons are seen flat-side-down.

No software has yet been confirmed or officially announced, but the trailer features a snippet of what appears to be a new Mario Kart title. Additionally, though Nintendo previously confirmed that Switch software would be playable on the successor, it has now confirmed that both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games will be playable on Nintendo Switch 2, with the caveat that certain games may not be supported or fully compatible (likely referring to games using additional hardware or accessories, such as Nintendo Labo, for example).

A special Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 presentation will air on 2 April, which will offer more details on the new system. A series of hands-on events until the "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" banner will also be held around the world:

  • 4-6 April - Paris and New York
  • 11-13 April - London and Los Angeles
  • 25-27 April - Milan, Berlin, Dallas, and Totonto
  • 26-27 April - Tokyo (Makuhari)
  • 9-11 May - Madrid and Amsterdam
  • 10-11 May - Melbourne
  • 31 May - 1 June - Seoul
  • Dates to be confirmed - Hong Kong and Taiwan
