The former President of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, has died at the age of 85.
Nintendo Company Ltd. has today confirmed the passing of Hiroshi Yamauchi.
Yamauchi, the third President of Nintendo and in charge of the company from 1949 to his retirement in 2002, died in hospital this morning after contracting pneumonia.
Yamauchi was the third family member to preside over the company, which was founded by his great-grandfather Fusajiro Yamauchi in 1889 and later passed to his son-in-law, Sekiryo Yamauchi; upon his death, it was passed to his grandson, Hiroshi.
During Yamauchi's reign, Nintendo was transformed into an electronic entertainment company, a direction in which Yamauchi steered it, resulting in popular systems such as 1981's Donkey Kong arcade and 1983's Family Computer (Famicom), brought to the West as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
President Satoru Iwata has today led tributes to Yamauchi:
We will continue to treasure the values Yamauchi taught us - that what makes you unique lies at the core of entertainment. And we at Nintendo will continue to change the company flexibly to adapt to the times, as Yamauchi did, to carry on his spirit.
Hiroshi Yamauchi, former President and Chairman of Nintendo who has died today at the age of 85, is survived by three children.
Surely that's old news by now...
