Nintendo Direct: Mario Kart World announced as Nintendo Switch 2 launch title

By Jack Taylor – 2 April 2025

Mario Kart World, a brand new title in the Mario Kart series, has been announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title.

A brand new Mario Kart was previously teased in the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal trailer, and opened today's Nintendo Direct presentation with a full reveal. The new title - officially called Mario Kart World - will be available on launch day (5 June), both as a standalone title and bundled with a Nintendo Switch 2 as a digital code.

In a departure from previous Mario Kart titles, Mario Kart World is set across a vast world with a massive variety of tracks. Races now feature 24 drivers at once - double the previous maximum of 12 first seen in Mario Kart Wii - and will see players drive to the next track after crossing the finish line of the previous one.

A new Knockout Tour mode was revealed, where players will race through courses back-to-back and hit checkpoints along the way. While 24 drivers will start, those not above a certain position at each checkpoint will be eliminated from the race, leaving fewer and fewer on the track as time goes by.

Also added is a Free Roam mode, letting players drive virtually anywhere around the world, finding shortcuts, secrets, and so on. Players can also pose for photos with friends when playing locally or online with others.

A special Mario Kart World Direct will air on 17 April at 06:00 PST / 09:00 EST / 14:00 UK time with more details about the game ahead of its 5 June release date.
